Built for dyslexic thinkers.

Designed for growth.

LKA doesn't simply accommodate students with dyslexia. Our entire learning environment is formed by how dyslexic students learn. We pair evidence-based methods with a school community that helps students build academic skills and confidence.

At LKA, students experience:

✓ 90 minutes of specialized reading instruction every day

✓ Structured literacy using the Orton-Gillingham approach

✓ Small-group reading instruction

✓ Academic Language Therapists trained through the Dyslexia Resource Center

✓ A whole-child approach that builds confidence, connection, and self-esteem

"My child has grown more than should be possible in such a short time from having 90-minute day-to-day instruction."

Your path to progress

If your child isn't making the progress you hoped for this school year, you don't have to wait until next year to make a change. LKA accepts applications throughout the school year, giving eligible students the opportunity to transition into a school just for them.

Step 1 - Take The Pre-Screener

Complete the dyslexia screener with your child in mind. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing. This is not the official dyslexia evaluation, but it the best first step.

Take The Pre-Screener

Step 2 - We Review and Follow Up with Next Steps

If signs of dyslexia are present, we refer your child to the Dyslexia Resource Center for a core evaluation. You'll then apply for Louisiana Key Academy.

Mid-year questions

Nervous about switching? We can help.

  • Can my child really start in the middle of the school year?

Yes. Unlike traditional schools, Louisiana Key Academy offers rolling admissions. When your child needs help, we’re ready to provide it.

  • What happens if I apply after open enrollment closed?

Applications are processed in the order they’re received. Once eligibility is confirmed, your child is placed on either the accepted list or the waiting list. Seats open up throughout the year.

  • What happens if I would like to apply after the open enrollment period?

Children who apply after Open Enrollment closes are processed in the order their applications are received. Pending completion of the application process and meeting eligibility requirements, students are placed on the appropriate list - accepted or waiting list. If your child is on the waiting list, don’t be discouraged! Often, seats open up throughout the summer.

  • Is Louisiana Key Academy really free?

Yes. LKA is a public charter school funded through state and federal education dollars. There is no tuition, and all core services including specialized dyslexia instruction are provided at no cost.

  • Will my child fall behind by changing schools?

Our full academic curriculum is aligned to Louisiana state standards, so your child continues the same coursework. What changes is how reading and writing are taught.

  • Do you provide transportation?

Our Baton Rouge campus operates one limited bus route, and we’re working to expand options at our other campuses. Our team will share current information during enrollment.

  • How long does the application process take?

Completing the online application only takes a few minutes. However, the process isn’t finished until all required documents are submitted. Once we receive your documents, our team reviews everything and follows up with you. Most families hear back within 3–5 business days after their documents are received, and any needed testing is scheduled with Dyslexia Resource Center  as quickly as possible.

  • What makes your teachers different?

At Louisiana Key Academy, our Structured Literacy teachers are Certified Academic Language Practitioners or Therapists. They have advanced training in how to teach students with dyslexia. Our teachers understand the “sea of strengths” that dyslexic children possess and intentionally build on those strengths in every class. They also provide targeted support for reading and writing weaknesses using evidence-based, structured literacy methods that are woven into all subjects—not just reading. This specialized training and whole-school approach make our teachers uniquely prepared to help dyslexic students thrive.

  • Do you provide transportation?

At this time, Louisiana Key Academy does not provide full transportation services.

Our Baton Rouge campus currently operates one limited bus route, and we are actively working to expand transportation options across all campuses. The LKA community is raising funds to add additional bus routes so that more families can access this service in the future.

If you are interested in transportation options, our team will share the most current information during the enrollment process.

"They are learning the way they need to learn and their confidence is being built...I would drive two hours for that."
