Frequently Asked Questions
How does Open Enrollment work?
When the Open Enrollment period ends, we compare the number of eligible and completed applicants to the number of available seats in each grade level. If more seats are available than eligible and completed applicants, we accept all eligible children who applied during Open Enrollment.
Children who apply after Open Enrollment closes are processed in the order their applications are received. Pending completion of the application process and meeting eligibility requirements, students are placed on the appropriate list - accepted or waiting list.
What do you do if there are more applicants than seats?
If we have fewer seats available than eligible and completed applicants, an electronic lottery will be used to randomly select which eligible applicants get a seat and which eligible applicants are placed on the waiting list.
What happens if I would like to apply after the open enrollment period?
Children who apply after Open Enrollment closes are processed in the order their applications are received. Pending completion of the application process and meeting eligibility requirements, students are placed on the appropriate list - accepted or waiting list. If your child is on the waiting list, don’t be discouraged! Often, seats open up throughout the summer.
Is Louisiana Key Academy really free?
Yes. Louisiana Key Academy is a public charter school, so it is completely tuition-free.
There is no cost to attend, and all core services—including specialized dyslexia instruction—are provided at no charge to families. As a public school, LKA is funded through state and federal education dollars, not tuition.
How do I know if my child has dyslexia
Dyslexia can look different from child to child, but the most common signs involve difficulty with reading, spelling, and recognizing words despite normal intelligence and strong effort.
The best way to know is through a screening or evaluation. Louisiana Key Academy offers free dyslexia screenings, and families can also pursue formal testing through the Dyslexia Resource Center.
Early screening helps determine whether additional support is needed.
What grades do you serve?
Louisiana Key Academy serves students in elementary and middle school, with grade levels varying by campus:
Baton Rouge: Grades 1–8
Caddo: Grades 1–6 (expanding)
Northshore: Grades 1–7
How long does the application process take?
Completing the online application only takes a few minutes. However, the process isn’t finished until all required documents are submitted. Once we receive your documents, our team reviews everything and follows up with you. Most families hear back within 3–5 business days after their documents are received, and any needed testing is scheduled with Dyslexia Resource Center as quickly as possible.
What makes your teachers different?
At Louisiana Key Academy, our Structured Literacy teachers are Certified Academic Language Practitioners or Therapists. They have advanced training in how to teach students with dyslexia. Our teachers understand the “sea of strengths” that dyslexic children possess and intentionally build on those strengths in every class. They also provide targeted support for reading and writing weaknesses using evidence-based, structured literacy methods that are woven into all subjects—not just reading. This specialized training and whole-school approach make our teachers uniquely prepared to help dyslexic students thrive.
Do you provide transportation?
At this time, Louisiana Key Academy does not provide full transportation services.
Our Baton Rouge campus currently operates one limited bus route, and we are actively working to expand transportation options across all campuses. The LKA community is raising funds to add additional bus routes so that more families can access this service in the future.
If you are interested in transportation options, our team will share the most current information during the enrollment process.
Our flagship 14-acre campus serves East Baton Rouge, Ascension, and Livingston Parishes. Purpose-built for dyslexic learners with spacious classrooms, athletic facilities, and outdoor learning spaces.
Grades: 1st - 8th
Located in Shreveport's Broadmoor neighborhood, our newest campus opened in 2023. Serving Caddo Parish and surrounding areas with plans to expand through 8th grade.
Grades: 1st - 6th (expanding)
More than a school--it's a close-knit community. Our Covington campus serves St. Tammany Parish families in an environment where every student feels seen, valued, and understood.
Grades: 1st - 7th
